
Not everyone shares the official TGI McFunsters viewpoint about Vietnamese food being a near perfect and beautiful expression of what food should be. Like my Dad for instance, a very well educated, yet apparently still very bitter Vietnam vet. This all came into a painful focus the one time he met my roommates and the Girl I Was Desperate to Impress for the first time.
Dad: I’m starving. You guys want to grab a bite to eat?
Girl I Was Desperate to Impress: (excitedly) We should go to Khai Hoan! Its the best Vietnamese food in the city.
Me: Oh no.

Dad: I just kill them. I don’t eat their food.
(stunned awkward silence)
Me: Who feels like burgers?
good lord.
